Rwanda

RWANDA is one of the poorest countries in the world. This small country in Central Africa, about a third of the size of Scotland, is populated by 8 million people. 90% of the population are subsistence farmers.

In 1994, there was a genocide in Rwanda and a million people were massacred in 100 days. As a result, 60% of the population is women (mostly widows). There are about 350,000 orphans in the country.

Hazel Bech has been visiting Rwanda every year since 2000 and has seen massive changes taking place in that time. There has been a lot of progress made in rebuilding roads, services and the main towns. There has been a major push to bring perpetrators to justice through local gacaca courts and the churches are working hard to bring the gospel of Christ to the wounded hearts of the people.

Yet there is still a long way to go. Underneath the smiling faces lies unimaginable pain.
