RWANDA is one of the poorest countries in the world. This small country in Central Africa, about a third of the size of Scotland, is populated by 8 million people. 90% of the population are subsistence farmers. In 1994, there was a genocide in Rwanda and a million people were massacred in 100 days. As a result, 60% of the population is women (mostly widows). There are about 350,000 orphans in the country.
